This is the maintenance schedule with associated service intervals for the 1998-2002 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R.
The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R was introduced in 1995 and has been constantly updated throughout the years. the Ninja line of Kawasaki motorcycles in the 1980s and still carries the name today. In 1998, the Ninja ZX-6R got a major update, improving the airbox and re-turning the engine for about 10% more power.
In 2003, the Ninja ZX-6R was replaced with the ZX-6R 636.
Here are all the maintenance schedules for the ZX-6R series.
- 1998-2002: Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, a 599cc sport bike
- 2003-2006: Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 636, a higher displacement sport bike than earlier generations
- 2003-2006: Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6RR, a 599cc race class motorcycle
- 2007-2012: Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, only available in 599cc
- 2013-2023: Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 636, second generation with much more rider aids
- 2024+ Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 636, with updated breathing, gearing, TFT display, and modified maintenance requirements

1998-2002 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R Service Intervals
The Kawasaki ZX-6R has 3500 mile / 6000 km service intervals. At every service, change the oil. Kawasaki also recommends you change the oil every year.
There’s also a list of service items to check over at every service, including brakes, moving parts, and rubber components that might be failing.
Every two services, change the oil filter, sync the carbs, and check the valve clearances.
Every two years, change the coolant and the brake fluid, regardless of miles.

In the original maintenance schedule, some items are marked as recommended to be done by a dealer. But all can be done by a competent home mechanic with the proper tools.

Maintaining Your Chain on the Kawasaki ZX-6R
It’s important to maintain your chain on the ZX-6R, as on any chain-driven motorcycle. Use a good-quality chain lubricant like Motul chain paste, or a Motul chain care kit which comes with a couple of handy tools to maintain the chain.
Kawasaki recommends you follow the following chain maintenance schedule:

Notes:
- Do these items (checking/adjusting slack, and checking/applying lubrication) more often if you ride your ZX-6R in dusty or rainy conditions.
- Always lubricate the chain after washing the motorcycle.
Tyre size and tyre pressure for the 1998-2002 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R
The 1998-2002 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R has the following tyres and tyre sizes standard:

Note that the standard tire profiles changed in 2000 models.
The original ZX-6R shipped with Dunlop D207s, Bridgestone Battlax BTs, or Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. You can use whatever sport or sport touring tyres are available these days, of course.
About the 1998-2002 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R
The 1998-2002 Kawasaki ZX-6R is an early Kawasaki sport bike, still in production today in its latest iteration as the 2013+ Kawasaki ZX-6R 636.
In the mid 1990s, the first-gen 1995 Kawasaki ZX-6R is credited with causing other manufacturers to re-think their approach to sport bikes, though the first Kawasaki ZX-6R was in itself a response to the success Honda was having with the early carburettor-fed CBR600F.
The 1998 model of the ZX-6R was a significant revamp of the first 1995 model ZX-6R. Kawasaki made the bike smaller, more focused, and more race-oriented… and even cheaper.
Kawasaki overhauled the
- Engine — making it lighter and quieter, though the quoted power spec is the same (as is the bore and stroke)
- Chassis — making it lighter
- Suspension — upping the spec to something they considered more racetrack-ready, with a 46 mm conventional fork (replacing the 41mm fork)
- Brakes — giving the 1998 bike 6-piston calipers, replacing the 4-piston units
The end result is a more refined bike, both smoother and easier to ride quickly.
In 2000, Kawasaki made some updates to this model, upping the compression ratio, redline, and peak power output, also giving the 2000 models coil-over plugs to help keep up.
Kawasaki also changed the tire profiles for the 2000 models, so check the specs above to make sure you have the right ones!
