The Hyperstrada 821 was an evolution of the Hypermotard line. It’s basically a Hypermotard but configured for touring, with standard bags, centre stand, windscreen, and hand guards. It’s well-configured for going a long distance and then going berserk when you’re there. Unfortunately there’s no “SP” version of the Hyperstrada so you’re stuck with somewhat soft suspension.

Like the Hypermotard 821, the Hyperstrada 821 is based around an 821cc liquid-cooled fuel-injected 90-degree L-twin named the Testastretta 11-degree engine (though there are other motors with a Testastretta 11-degree configuration). In the Hyperstrada, the motor makes 81 kW (110 hp) at 9250 rpm, and peak torque of 89 Nm (66 ft-lb) at 7750 rpm.

A lot of the maintenance schedule for the Ducati Hyperstrada 821 is common to the Ducati Monster 821, with which the Hyper 821 shares an engine.

After 2015, the Hyperstrada 821 was replaced with the Ducati Hyperstrada 939.

Hyperstrada 821 Service Intervals

The Ducati Hyperstrada 821 has 9000 mile / 15000 km or annual service intervals. At every service, change the oil and filter, and look over the maintenance schedule for other things to check, clean, adjust, or lubricate.

The major “Desmo” valve service of the Hyper 821 is every 18000 miles / 30000 km, one of the benefits of the liquid-cooled Testastretta 11-degree engine.

As the camshafts are belt-driven, you also have to replace the belts — at the valve service, or every 5 years, whichever comes sooner.

Also periodically change the brake fluid, and the coolant. But the Hyperstrada 821 has a cable clutch, so you just need to keep it lubricated.

What you need to maintain the Ducati Hyperstrada 821

To maintain your Hyper 821 you need to make sure you have the best oil and other consumables, motorcycle-specific tools, and other tools for your workshop.

The following is a list of consumables (things like oil, spark plugs etc.) you need to maintain the Ducati Hyperstrada 821.

OilDucati recommends Shell Advance Ultra 15W-50 motorcycle oil, or another high-quality synthetic motorcycle oil like Motul 7100 15W-50 or Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W-50.
Oil filterGenuine Ducati part is 44440037A. I’d suggest removing that and using a HifloFiltro HF153RC oil filter which can be changed with a normal wrench.
Brake fluidDucati recommends Shell Advance DOT 4, but that’s quite hard to find, so Castrol DOT 4 Synthetic is a good and very high-quality alternative.
CoolantDucati recommends Shell Advance Coolant or a 35-40% mix of Glycoshell, a low-silicate, and nitrite-, amine-, and phosphate-free coolant. Motorex M3.0 is a suitable alternative.
Timing beltIs it time to change the timing belt? Don’t put it off… a broken timing belt will cost you a lot! You need part number 73740252A (and you need two).
Front brake padsStandard brake pads code is 61341021A. You can also use EBC FA630HH for more bite/feel.
Rear brake padsUse original part number 61340951A, EBC part number FA266HH for more bite/feel (and availability online)
Spark plugsNGK code MAR9A-J. Note they’re sold individually (and you have two cylinders).
Air filterThe part number for the air filter is 42610191A. You can also use K&N DU-1006.

About the Ducati Hyperstrada 821

The Ducati Hyperstrada is one of the Ducati’s Hypermotard family, although it’s a blend of the Hypermotard and Multistrada.

It’s essentially a Hypermotard that’s more comfortably set up for touring, with a better seat, luggage, and a slightly more comfortable position. Or you could consider it a Hyperstrada but with a little more hooligan personality, and less of a bias towards very long-distance (just medium distance).

The engine and the electronics are exactly the same between the Hyperstrada and Hypermotard. It has an 821cc 11-degree Testrastretta (“narrow head”) L-twin pushing out around 81 kW or 110 hp at 9250 rpm — a rev range that means you do not have to rev the Hyper 821 above 10K to have fun.

The specific characteristics of the Ducati Hyperstrada 821 that distinguish it from other Hypermotards are the:

  • Luggage on both sides as standard
  • Touring screen
  • More comfortable seat
  • Center stand
  • Hand guards

Other than that, it’s a very similar bike.

The Ducati Hyperstrada 821 has very simple ride gear. Its front suspension is a Kayaba 43mm upside-down fork with no adjustability, and the rear shock is a Sachs monoshock with adjustable preload and rebound damping.

The simple non-adjustable front suspension is one of the shortfalls of the Hyperstrada 821. Unlike the Hypermotard 821, there’s no “SP” version with fully adjustable sportbike-level suspension. And so the Hyperstrada 821 suffers from dive under heavy braking or cornering.

The front brakes of the Hyperstrada 821 are medium-spec Brembo M 4.32 calipers on 320mm discs. They’re more than capable considering the engine and suspension setup.

The Hyperstrada 821 is a strange bike to look at. It has a duck bill like a dirt bike (or… like a duck), but it has standard side bags and centrestand, like a traditional touring bike. Its handlebars are way up and the riding position is “sit up and beg”, but the windscreen isn’t that tall.

But the Hyperstrada 821 is quite well-equipped by the spec sheet. It comes with ABS, DTC, an LCD dash, and riding modes. There’s quite a lot to play with.

The Hyperstrada 821 was replaced by the Hyperstrada 939, but that was the last of this concept of motorcycle from Ducati.
