This is the maintenance schedule and service intervals for the Ducati 1199 Panigale motorcycles — sourced from the owner’s manual, and also consulting parts diagrams.
This maintenance schedule applies to the Ducati 1199 Panigale, 1199 Panigale S (with the Öhlins suspension and the lighter Marchesini rims), and yes, even the 1199 Panigale R, despite the modified engine internals for more power — the maintenance is the same (for street riding, not track).
The Ducati 1199 Panigale was an important update to the Ducati 1198 superbike. It’s powered by an 1198cc L-twin “Superquadro” engine that makes a claimed 145 kW (195 hp) and 133 Nm of torque (98 lb-ft) with chain-driven camshafts, still in Desmoquattro configuration.
At the time, the Ducati 1199 Panigale had the highest power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratio of any production motorcycles — its kerb weight is an insanely light 188kg. That’s lighter than most 600cc bikes.

Ducati 1199 Panigale Service Intervals
Overall, the Ducati 1199 Panigale (including S and R models) has 7500 mile / 12000 km or annual service intervals. At every service, change the oil and filter, and do a series of checks on the safety, suspension, and drivetrain systems.
The major “Desmo” service for the Ducati 1199 Panigale is every 15000 miles or 24000 km. That’s when you change the plugs and air filter, and check the valve clearances.
Luckily, Ducati moved to a gears and chain chain timing system for the 1199 Panigale, improving on the belt timing system from earlier pre-Panigale models because the belts don’t wear as much. Ducati mandates a 30000 mile / 48000 km inspection interval for the timing chain. The 899 Panigale shares this, too.
Beside that, regularly change the coolant, brake fluid, and clutch fluid.
Regular maintenance for the Ducati 1199 Panigale
This is maintenance that you can do yourself (though the manual says you need a dealer to do it).
Every 1 000 km / 600 miles OR 6 months (whichever comes earlier), perform the following maintenance:

Checking and Adjusting Chain Tension on the Ducati 1199 Panigale
To check chain tension (a.k.a. chain slack) on the Ducati 1199 Panigale, follow the following steps.
- Get a steel ruler, and preferably something to protect your fingers from chain grease (which is annoying to clean off).
- Find the position on the chain where the chain is tightest, by moving the motorcycle around and watching chain deflection.
- Put the motorcycle on its side stand.
- Find the position in the middle of the chain (the lower segment) and push down on the chain with a finger.
- Measure the distance between the centre of the chain pins and the aluminium section of the swinging arm.
Target chain slack on the Ducati 1199 Panigale: 50-52 mm
If the chain slack is off, you need to adjust the chain slack. For this, you’ll need an eccentric wrench.
- Loosen the pinch bolts on the rear of the swingarm (there are two).
- Use the eccentric wrench on the toothed wheel to move the chain forwards and backwards. Be careful — tiny movements (of just a few mm) can significantly affect slack.
- Keep measuring chain slack as you go.
- Finally, tighten the pinch bolts to 58 Nm / 43 lb-ft.

The Ducati 1199 Panigale was the most recent in Ducati’s superbike series that started way back with the Ducati 916.
As with all Ducati superbikes, the Ducati 1199 Panigale — whether in base, S, or R form — was a track-focused motorcycle, designed to be used at very least on winding roads with the tachometer halfway up.
The Ducati 1199 Panigale has a lot in common with the original 916 superbike. They’re both V-twin powered sportbikes with liquid-cooled 4-valve-per-cylinder engines.
But a lot of advances in tech from the 916 days mean that the 1199 is both more powerful AND more reliable, needing fewer services — valve services on the Ducati 1199 Panigale are every 15000 miles (24000 km), a huge jump from the early days of 6000-7500 mile service intervals.
The Ducati 1199 Panigale was a direct update to the Ducati 1198 superbike. The 1199 was also the first motorcycle to receive the “Panigale” name for its superbikes, something which Ducati has retained until today with the Ducati Panigale V4.
The 1199 Panigale has the same size engine as the 1198, but with a different layout (if the chain-driven cams didn’t give it away), though it makes roughly the same amount of power.
But the 1199 Panigale has an all-new electronics package that gives it cornering ABS and traction control as standard, as well as being one of the first production motorcycles with electronically adjustable suspension (in the S model).
The 1198 has a mass of torque in the bottom, that 1199 riders either adore, or don’t like as having been “uncontrollable”.
On top of that, the much reduced weight and the chassis redesign gives the 1199 stability one reviewer called “Fireblade-like”, incredibly — a compliment to both the Panigale and Fireblades!
The Ducati 1199 Panigale came principally in three different trims — the standard, S, and R spec, plus the exclusive 1199 Superleggera (not technically a Panigale, but like an evolved 1199 Panigale R). Here is how they differed in a nutshell:
