2017 BMW S1000R Maintenance schedule cover photo

This is the maintenance schedule and associated service intervals for the BMW S1000R from 2017 onward.

This means it applies to the

  • 2017 BMW S1000R
  • 2018 BMW S1000R
  • 2019 BMW S1000R
  • 2020 BMW S1000R

In addition, it shares a lot with the BMW S1000R from previous years, with only minor differences.

The maintenance schedule here is identical to the one for the Sport model.

What you need to service the BMW S1000R — Consumables and Special Tools

If you’re servicing the S1000R, you at least need

For the S1000R, the manual recommends the following specific consumables.

Afraid you’ll get lost? Get a manual. This Haynes manual applies to the S1000R, S1000RR, and S1000XR.

Engine oil
Per manual for all S bikes, 3.5L of SAE 5W-40, API SJ/JASO MA2. Additives (for instance, molybdenum-based substances) are prohibited, because they would attack the coatings on engine components, BMW Motorrad recommends BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil.
Oil filterAll BMW S bikes use a BMW/Mahle oil filter, part number 11 42 7 721 779. Available from Amazon.
Engine coolantBMW recommends BMW’s own coolant, with minimum 50% mixed with pure demineralised (not tap, not mineral) water. It’s based on ethylene glycol. But importantly, BMW says to never use coolants with nitrites or amines, those that “heal” the radiator, or a number of other solutions.
Spark plugsNGK LMAR9D-J. This is what the manual suggests. Make sure it’s gapped correctly to 0.8mm (get a gapping tool) and torqued to 12Nm/9 lb-ft.
Air filterYou can get the stock air filter, but riders love the maintenance-free Sprint air filter for the S1000R.
Brake padsUse the standard brake pads by Brembo, which you can order from your dealer. Or use EBC double hardened brake pads, a double set of FA604/4HH for the front, and FA213HH for the rear.
BMW S series consumables — S1000R, S1000XR, S1000RR

And the following general consumables are useful as well.

Brake fluidA DOT-4 lubricant is recommended. I recommend Castrol Dot 4 full synthetic — cost-effective and good.
Chain lubricantThe chain needs to be lubricated every 800 km/500 miles (or more, if it gets wet/dirty). Motul’s chain lube is good. Make sure you have the right applicator brush, and a rear stand, like this lightweight and well-priced Vortex race stand.
Clutch cable lubricantRemember to lubricate your clutch cable. Protect All Cable Life is a good general-purpose lubricant.
GreaseGet a good lithium soap based grease for lubricating major components like your side stand, centre stand, and bearings.
General motorcycle consumables — Brake fluid, chain lube, clutch lube, and grease

About the 2017+ BMW S1000R

In 2017, BMW reviewed its S1000R for the first time since 2014.

Still based on the incredible S1000RR superbike, the S1000R is the naked/streetfighter version, with handlebars and a detuned engine that produces about 20% less power, but which makes around 10 Nm (or 7 ft-lb) across over half the rev range.
