Yamaha Super Ténéré XTZ1200Z (2010-2020, inc. ES) Maintenance Schedule and Service Intervals

This is the maintenance schedule and associated service intervals for the Yamaha Super Ténéré, also known as the XTZ1200Z or XT1200Z, and known affectionately by its fans as the “S10”.

The Yamaha Super Ténéré was launched in 2010 and has had a few minor revisions since then, as well as one major revision in 2014 when the second-generation Super Ténéré was born, along with the 2014+ Super Ténéré ES, with some small engine improvements, adjustable windshield, improved LCD panel, improved traction control, and cruise control as standard on both the standard and ES models.

All these variants have had the same fundamental service schedule as they share the same engine and drivetrain.

The Super Ténéré is an adventure touring motorcycle with an upright seating position, powerful 1199 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine with a 270-degree crankshaft, and everything needed for long-range travel.

Being a touring motorcycle, it’s the kind of bike a lot of riders like to work on themselves. Luckily, it’s very low-maintenance. The engine is very reliable, has only one cylinder head (the beauty of a parallel twin) and it drives its rear wheel through a shaft drive.

The Super Ténéré was also released in an ES trim with electronic suspension, that lets you choose preload and damping presets via button. The ES also has heated grips as standard.

What you need to service the Yamaha Super Ténéré

Despite some minor revisions, the things you need to service the Yamaha Super Ténéré has not changed fundamentally since its decade of service started.

ItemYamaha Super Ténéré XTZ1200 recommendations per manual
Engine oilUse 3.4L (with filter change) of Yamalube 10W-40 or Yamalube 10W-50. The manual recommends “Yamalube” and it’s affordable, so why not! You can also use a high grade synthetic like Motul 7100 10W-40.

Don’t over-torque the bolt (spec is 20 Nm/14 lb-ft for both oil drain bolts per the manual) — use a torque wrench if you don’t have experience with how much torque is enough.
Yamaha engine oil recommendation chart
Oil filterMost users change the filter with every oil change. Either get a stock oil filter (part 5GH-13440-50-00) or the HifloFiltro HF204RC. Torque for the oil filter is 17 Nm/12 lb-ft.
Engine coolantThe manual doesn’t specify what coolant to use, but all Yamaha motorcycles use similar coolants. Zerex G05 is a good ethylene glycol antifreeze that is phosphate and silicate free.
Spark PlugsNGK CPR8EB9 should be used per the manual. Make sure it’s gapped correctly to 0.8-0.9mm (get a gapping tool) and torqued with a torque wrench to 13Nm/9.4 ft-lb.
Air filterYou have a few choices for air filter: K&N YA-1210 (easy to obtain), HiFlo HFA4922 (a forum favourite), or the OEM Yamaha part 23P144510000.
Brake padsYou need two pairs of brake pads for the front, and one pair for the rear. You can get OEM parts from the dealer, or get aftermarket EBC parts, which offer more more bite and less fade.
Front: 2C02580500 (from dealer), or EBC part FA380HH
Rear: 3D8258060000 (from dealer), or EBC part FA319/2HH
Final gear oilYou don’t have a chain, but you have to maintain the final drive! Yamaha requires “SAE 80 API GL-4 Hypoid gear oil” e.g. Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 or Lucas Oil 80W-90, which many users have used and reported no problems with.

Yamaha Super Ténéré XTZ1200 Maintenance Schedule

Below is the maintenance schedule for the Yamaha Super Ténéré. It’s adapted from the manual to make it easier to read.

Maintenance schedule guidelines

  • At the end of the maintenance schedule, repeat it in the pattern shown.
  • Yamaha suggests you only change the oil, do external greasing, and check for leaks, cracks and damage yourself, and give everything else to a mechanic.
  • The European spec manual is very similar to the US-spec, but the intervals are different. Both are shown below. See here for the main differences.

About the Yamaha Super Ténéré XTZ1200

2019 Yamaha XTZ1200Z RHS static outdoor

The Yamaha Super Ténéré XTZ1200 is a large adventure touring motorcycle, conceptually Yamaha’s answer to the BMW R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS.

The Yamaha Super Ténéré has always been powered by an 1199 cc parallel twin dual overhead cam engine with a 270-degree firing order, giving it a bit of character, much like its more modern, smaller stablemate, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 XTZ700.

However, the big cylinders of the XTZ1200 move a lot more slowly — this isn’t a free-revving engine and feels more sedate than its smaller (newer) sibling.

The engine has a modest compression ratio of 11.01:1 and makes 81 kW (110 hp) at 7,250 rpm and 110 Nm (84 ft-lb) at 6,000 rpm. But a lot of that torque comes on low. And despite the wet weight of 261 kg, a lot of the weight of the Super Ténéré XTZ1200 is down low, which makes the Super Ténéré surprisingly agile off-road, according to reviewers and owners.

The Super Ténéré’s riding position is comfortable, designed for the long-distance. Like on many adventure tourers, you have an upright seating position with lots of leg room, making it easy to stand up when you need to.

To help you get there it’s also designed to have low maintenance — this is a shaft-driven adventure bike! The front tyre is a 19-inch wheel, giving you agility over large obstacles, somewhat at a cost of cornering performance (but diving into corners isn’t what the Super Ténéré is about).

The standard Super Ténéré comes with a skid plate and hand guards.

Over the lifespan of the Yamaha Super Ténéré, Yamaha has made relatively few changes.

Pundits say there’s a “gen 1” and “gen 2” Yamaha Super Ténéré (the latter made from 2014 onward), but they’re quite similar. The main differences are

  • Standard cruise control
  • An improved side stand
  • LED turn signals
  • Improved clutch
  • New instruments
  • Recalibrated drive mode
  • Revised windscreen mount (built onto the old one), handlebar risers
  • Lighter pistons

The year 2014 also saw Yamaha release the ES model with adjustable suspension.

Maintaining the Yamaha Super Ténéré is much like maintaining most other Yamaha liquid-cooled motorcycles. The maintenance intervals are 4000 miles (US) or 10000 km (Europe), with valve services needed every 26600 miles (US) or 40000 km (Europe).
