Ducati Diavel 1260 (2019-2022) Maintenance Schedule

This is the Ducati Diavel 1260 maintenance schedule and service intervals — sourced from the owner’s manual, and consulting with the service manual and parts diagrams.

Ducati released the Ducati Diavel 1260 in 2019, taking the new 1262cc 119kW/162hp DVT engine from the XDiavel where it had been making a scene.

Here are the other motorcycles in the Ducati Diavel and XDiavel range:

The Ducati Diavel 1260 is a considerable upgrade to the 2nd gen Ducati Diavel which had been produced from 2015 to 2018.

The Ducati Diavel 1260 S is a sportier version of the Ducati Diavel 1260, with upgraded suspension, braking, and other components.

Ducati Diavel 1260 Service Intervals

Generally speaking, service intervals for the 2019-2022 Ducati Diavel 1260 are every 9000 miles or every 15000 km, at which point you change the oil and filter and spark plugs, and do a whole bunch of checks.

The major “Desmo” service interval for the Ducati Diavel 1260 is every two services, or 18000 miles / 30000 km. That’s when you change the air filter, change the timing belt, and do the valve clearances.

As the Ducati Diavel 1260 DVT has a 4 valve per cylinder Desmodromic engine, there are 8 valves and thus 16 clearances to check, as there is both an opener and a closer. Further, changing one clearance on a valve can affect the other.

Because the 1260 DVT motor has belt-driven cams, you also have to change the timing belts at every major service. The recommended interval is every five years if you haven’t changed them on a distance interval recently.

Finally, make sure to keep the coolants (engine coolant and brake / clutch fluid) fresh per the schedule.

Ducati Diavel 1260 Maintenance Schedule

The following is the maintenance schedule for the Ducati Diavel 1260.

This maintenance schedule is in the same format as in the manual, though altered to fit this screen. It’s a lot like the maintenance schedule for the previous Ducati Diavel with the 30,000 km major service interval gap.

Like many other modern Ducatis, the service intervals for the Ducati 1260 are every 9000 miles or 15000 km, at which point you change the engine oil and filter. Every two services (18000 miles / 30000 km), you check the valve clearances and change the timing belts. There are many other checks to do, all listed in the maintenance schedule below.

Notes

  • Major service intervals are every 30K km (18K miles), where you have to change the timing belts (if you didn’t change them at the 5-year mark) and adjust the valve clearance
  • Follow the earlier of the time-based or distance-based interval

Chain Maintenance on the Ducati Diavel 1260

Unlike the XDiavel, the Ducati Diavel 1260 has a chain drive, so needs regular maintenance.

Use a good-quality chain lubricant like Motul chain paste, or a Motul chain care kit which comes with a couple of handy tools to maintain the chain.

Ducati recommends you follow the following chain maintenance schedule:

Chain maintenance itemEvery
Check drive chain lubrication condition, lubricating if necessary600 mi / 1000 km or year
(whichever earlier)
Check drive chain slack, adjusting if necessary
Target chain slack: 31-33 mm (1.22-1.3 inches)
600 mi / 1000 km or year
(whichever earlier)

Notes:

  • Do these items (checking/adjusting slack, and checking/applying lubrication) more often if you ride your Diavel in harsh conditions – e.g. dusty roads, rain, muddy roads, or if you ride aggressively or track your bike.
  • Always lubricate the chain after washing the motorcycle (assuming the chain has become wet).

Tire sizes and pressures for the Diavel 1260

The Ducati Diavel 1260 runs tubeless radial tires, and comes stock with Pirelli Diablo Rosso III on it.

The front size is a very standard sportbike size, but the wide profile of the rear tyre makes fewer brands available.

About the Ducati Diavel 1260

Ducati Diavel 1260 base model

The Ducati Diavel 1260 is Ducati’s big “bruiser” motorcycle.

While the XDiavel 1260 is decidedly a cruiser, the Diavel is somewhere in between being a standard sport bike and a big cruiser. It’s heavy, but not ungainly. And it’s comfortable, but you’re not going to take a nap on one.

The core of the Diavel 1260 is the same basic engine block as found in the XDiavel. It’s powered by a 1262cc liquid-cooled 8-valve desmodromic “Testastretta” V-twin that makes 119 kW (162 hp) of peak power at 9500 rpm, with peak torque of 129 Nm (95 ft-lb) at 7500 rpm.

This is a huge amount of both power and torque, and very down low in the rev range compared to Ducati’s high-powered Ducati Streetfighter V4 — to say nothing of the Panigale superbike.

The Ducati Diavel 1260 isn’t anywhere near as heavy as it looks. It weighs 244 kg (538 lb) fully fuelled, and a lot of the weight is down low, which means that it doesn’t even feel heavy at parking lot speeds. Besides, this is barely more than your average “roadster” (these days in the 220-230 kg range), but with a ton more power, size, and comfort.

Another distinguishing factor between the Diavel 1260 and “cruisers” (other than the XDiavel) is that it can lean. There’s good ground clearance on either side and no floorboards or giant pegs to scrape.

Finally, the Diavel 1260 gets the latest in rider aids, including cornering ABS and traction control.

Ducati released a Diavel 1260 S as well, which is similar to the base model Ducati 1260 but has upgraded suspension with fully adjustable Öhlins forks and rear shock, upgraded brakes, and a standard quick shifter. It’s also more expensive!

Ducati revised the Diavel for the 2023 model year, releasing the Ducati Diavel V4.
