Ducati Monster 1200 S Maintenance Schedule (2017+)

This is the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2017+ maintenance schedule and service intervals — sourced from the owner’s manual, parts diagrams, and the service manuals.

This applies to the Ducati Monster 1200S from 2017+, with the upgraded engine, IMU, and some other improvements.

The Ducati Monster 1200 S, as with the base model 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200, is based around an 1198 cc “Testrastretta 11-degree” liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin motor. It has dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder with desmodromic actuation.

In the 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 base model and S models, this motor makes 110 kW (150 hp) of power at 9250 rpm, with 126 Nm (93 lb-ft) at 7750 rpm. Peak power is about 10% higher than in the earlier 2014-2016 Ducati Monster 1200 S.

Here are all our Ducati Monster maintenance schedules:

The 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 S was significantly upgraded from the 2017+ Monster 1200 base model in terms of ride gear. The 1200 S got

  • 48mm Öhlins fully adjustable forks (vs 43mm Kayaba forks, though still fully adjustable)
  • A fully-adjustable Öhlins rear shock (vs a preload and damping adjustable Sachs rear shock)
  • Lightweight 3-spoke alloy wheels
  • Larger Brembo M50 brakes
  • Other lightweight carbon fibre components

Ducati Monster 1200 S Service Intervals

One of the benefits of the liquid-cooled Testastretta-11 engine in the Ducati Monster 1200 S is the longer service intervals.

Oil service intervals for the Monster 1200 are every 9000 miles / 15000 km or every year. At every oil service, also change the oil filter, and look over the maintenance schedule for things to lubricate, clean, or otherwise check.

You only have to check/adjust the valve clearance every 18000 miles / 30000 km, and you only have to change the timing belts at the same interval — or every five years. Less checking valves and belts means more time riding.

The Monster 1200 S has a hydraulic clutch, so make sure to replace the fluid when you do the brake fluid. Also, needless to say, keep the coolant fresh.

What you need to service the Ducati Monster 1200 S (2017+)

When servicing your Ducati Monster 1200 S, you need the following spare parts and consumables.

Most of these are common to the base model 1200 S, but some are different.

PartDucati Monster 1200 S 2014-2016
OilDucati recommends Shell Advance 4T Ultra 15W-50 motorcycle oil the Monster 1200 S, or another 15W-50 oil that meets specs of JASO MA2 or API SN.

An alternative high-grade synthetic is Mobil 1 15W-50.

Oil filterGenuine Ducati part is 44440038A for the Ducati Monster 1200 S. You can also use a Hiflofiltro HF153RC oil filter which can be changed with a normal wrench.
Brake fluid, Clutch fluidDucati recommends Shell Advance DOT 4, or another high-grade synthetic brake/clutch fluid like Castrol DOT 4 Synthetic.
CoolantDucati recommends ENI Bike S (formerly known as Agip), an ethylene glycol-based coolant that’s silicate, phosphate, nitrate, borate, and amine free. An alternative is Motorex M3.0.
Timing beltRemember to change that timing belt! Part number is 73740252A.
Front brake padsOEM part number is 61341101A (for one pair) or EBC FA447HH. Note these parts are unique to the S.

Regular maintenance for the Ducati Monster 1200 S

This is the regular maintenance for the Monster 1200 S (that you can mostly do yourself).

Every 600 miles or 1000 kms OR 6 months (whichever is earlier), do the following:

Check engine oil level (top up with Mobil 1 15W-50 as necessary)
Check brake fluid level (top up with Castrol DOT 4 if necessary)
Check tyre pressure and wear
Check the drive chain tension and lubrication (maintain with a Motul chain care kit).
Check brake pads. If necessary, replace (FA447HH, FA266HH)
Core maintenance every 600 miles or 1000 km on Ducati Monster 1200 S (all years)

Ducati Monster 1200 S (2017) Maintenance Schedule Table

This maintenance schedule for the Ducati Monster 1200 S is in the same format as in the manual.

The 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 has a similar maintenance schedule to the earlier 2014-2016 model.

The main things about the schedule are that valve clearance and timing belt change intervals are every 30000 km (18000 mi). Change belts every five years if you don’t clear that distance.

Notes on the maintenance schedule:

  • [D] means you may need dealer tools to do this (e.g. their service computers)
  • Follow the earlier of the time-based or distance-based interval.
  • The break-in service is omitted as dealers usually do that service (and it has likely passed)

About the Ducati Monster 1200 S (2017+)

The Ducati Monster 1200 S released in 2017 keeps the same fundamental platform of the first Monster 1200 released in 2014 — but improves it across multiple dimensions.

The 2017+ Monster 1200 S is still a Ducati Monster through and through. It’s a naked sportbike or streetfighter, with a detuned superbike engine, handlebars, and a lot of style.

The heart of the 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200S is still an 1198cc liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin. It has dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder that are desmodromically activated. That much is the same as the 2014-2016 Monster 1200 and 1200 S.

Where it’s different is that the 2017+ models have been tuned for more power.

Comparing 2014-2016 vs 2017+ Monster 1200 and 1200S

The “more power at higher revs” theme is common across many motorcycles tuned for compliance with Euro 4 regulations.

The Monster 1200 S gets significant updates over the base model Monster 1200, too. Here’s how the 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 S is different from the 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 (base model):

Comparing specs of the 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 and 1200 S

Those details may not seem like a lot, particularly as the base model 2017+ Ducati Monster 1200 is so capable — for example, the base model already has fully adjustable forks.

The net effect is discernible in aggressive riding. The improved forks means that the bike is more quick to settle after shocks (e.g. cornering, or harsh bumps), and the improved brakes means that you have stopping power for extended periods, e.g. long days at the track.

The long-term benefit of the 1200 S is that it will always be a more desirable collector.

But both bikes are very capable on the street, and many will be happy to save the expense, and leave suspension upgrades as a future option.
