Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (2019+, 5th Gen) Maintenance Schedule and Service Intervals
This is the maintenance schedule and service intervals for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, first announced in 2019 for the same model year.
The Toyota RAV4 is Toyota’s best-selling vehicle in the US, and the best-selling non-pickup truck among all brands. The 2019+ model is the latest generation (the 5th gen RAV 4), with a redesigned exterior, more legroom, increased ride height, a revised chassis, improved motor, upgraded interior, and many more improvements.
The latest RAV4 comes in three main models
- Toyota RAV4 Gas, powered by a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine
- Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, with the 4-cylinder engine detuned slightly and mated with an electric motor
- Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV (2021+), a higher-power plug-in hybrid (select markets)
The core of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a 2.5 liter inline 4-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and variable valve timing — VVT-iE on the intake camshaft, and VVT-i on the exhaust. The gasoline motor is paired with a sealed Li-on battery and a synchronous permanent magnet motor that makes peak 149 lb-ft of torque and a sustained 89 ft-lb of torque.
Together, the hybrid motor makes 219 combined net horsepower at 5700 rpm. And that comes with whopping combined fuel economy of 40 mpg — very good for a compact SUV!
The engine platform is similar to that in the 2018+ Toyota Camry Hybrid. However, there are a few unique items in the RAV4’s maintenance schedule.

What You Need to Service Your Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
If you want to do a service on your Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (2019+), then you need the following fluids and consumable items.
These came from the Toyota RAV4 manual as well as other online parts repositories.

These are the major service intervals for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
Bear in mind that the table of service below is for regular use — a mixture of commuting and highway work. The RAV4 Hybrid is mostly a general urban vehicle, but it can be taken on some light off-road excursions (maybe down some dirt roads). Because of its economy, it can also serve as a good taxi or ride-share vehicle. These kinds of conditions are “special conditions” that may put the Hybrid under more stress. The below maintenance schedule is derived from the US booklet for the Toyota RAV4 with the Hybrid 2.5L / electric motor-driven engine.
Notes on the maintenance schedule:
- Most items have both time-based or distance-based maintenance intervals. Follow the earlier of the two.
- At the end of the schedule below, follow it in the same pattern (every 1, 2, 3, 4 services etc.)
- Some items are less frequent, e.g. replacing spark plugs or the coolant. They’re in a separate table below for “long-term” maintenance items.
Legend
The items below may have a letter marked against them meaning you only need to perform the service if you use the vehicle in a certain way. Here’s what they mean.

The below maintenance schedule is from the Europe/APAC Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Warranty and Maintenance Guide. It’s specific to the RAV4 Hybrid, with some subtle differences between it and the other maintenance schedules, including for other RAV4s and other hybrids.
Compared to the US manual, the service intervals are a bit different for many minor items.

About the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the latest in the line of Toyota RAV4s, the compact SUVs that have been incredibly popular for striking an excellent balance between safety, budget, and all-round practicality. The Hybrid version adds economy — 40 mpg combined economy — to the already compelling mix.
The base engine in the RAV4 Hybrid is a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine. It’s assisted by two electric motors, one of which combines with the gas engine to drive the front wheels, and the other of which drives the rear. So the four wheel drive system in the RAV4 doesn’t need a transfer case in the middle to move power to the rear wheels, unlike other petrol-powered 4WD models (like the Toyota 4Runner).
Like other RAV4s, the RAV4 Hybrid comes in a number of spec levels, ranging from the LE through to the Limited, with a number of stepping stones along the way. All of them share an engine and drivetrain, but you get more interior and exterior features, like sunroof, better infotainment system, and larger wheels.
If you’re interested in knowing what the RAV4 Hybrid is like to drive — there are lots of resources out there, and test drives are plentiful! But suffice it to say that it handles well both in the city and doing light off-road work, for example on dirt or rocky roads. The all-wheel-drive system engages naturally and gives you traction where you need it. Obviously you won’t be doing rock crawling, but I don’t think that’s what anyone buying a RAV4 would be intending.
The RAV4 Hybrid is a decently quick car, too. People get it from 0-60 mph (~0-100 km/h) in mid 7 seconds, which is defensible. Of course mileage will plummet if you hammer it like that…
There’s a faster alternative available in some markets, too — the Toyota RAV4 Prime, the plugin hybrid (PHEV) version of the RAV4 Hybrid.
Maintaining a hybrid motor has some slight differences to maintaining a non-Hybrid. Basically, you just have to make sure that the systems that keep the battery cool keep functioning. This means making sure that a) the intake filter for the battery cooling system remains clean and unclogged (so clean it every now and then), and b) that the coolant for the inverter is replaced. Luckily, the latter is done only VERY rarely.
